Vegan Matcha Shamrock Shake in a glass, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of matcha powder, with a refreshing minty green color for St. Patrick's Day.

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, many of us are thinking about ways to celebrate the holiday in style—perhaps with a green twist! This year, why not add a healthy spin to the festivities by incorporating matcha into your celebration like with a Vegan Matcha Shamrock Shake? Not only is matcha deliciously vibrant, but it also packs a powerful nutritional punch that can benefit your health in a variety of ways.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where you steep the leaves and then discard them, matcha involves consuming the whole tea leaf in powdered form. This means you’re getting all of the nutrients and antioxidants directly from the leaf.

The green color of matcha comes from chlorophyll, which is responsible for its antioxidant-rich properties. Matcha has been used for centuries in Japanese tea ceremonies, but recently, it has become popular worldwide due to its incredible health benefits and versatility in various dishes, including smoothies, lattes, and desserts.

Health Benefits of Matcha

1. Rich in Antioxidants

Matcha is packed with antioxidants, particularly catechins, which help protect your cells from oxidative stress and free radical damage. One type of catechin in matcha, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), has been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. The high concentration of antioxidants in matcha can contribute to overall health and longevity.

2. Boosts Energy and Mental Clarity

Matcha contains caffeine, but in a more balanced and sustainable way than coffee. The caffeine in matcha is combined with L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and focus. This combination gives you a steady, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crashes that can come with coffee. If you’re looking for a more balanced energy boost throughout the day, matcha is an excellent option.

3. Supports Metabolism and Weight Loss

Studies have shown that the catechins in matcha can help enhance metabolism and promote fat burning. By increasing fat oxidation during exercise, matcha can aid in weight management and contribute to overall wellness. It’s a great addition to a balanced diet, particularly if you’re looking to boost your metabolism and support your fitness goals.

4. Promotes Detoxification

Matcha contains chlorophyll, a powerful detoxifier that helps remove toxins from the body. Chlorophyll also supports the body’s natural cleansing processes, contributing to better digestion and overall health. By drinking matcha, you can give your body a gentle detox while reaping the numerous health benefits of this superfood.

5. Enhances Mood and Reduces Stress

The L-theanine in matcha not only promotes focus but also has a calming effect on the body and mind. It helps reduce stress levels and improve mood, making matcha a great choice for anyone looking to stay calm and centered throughout the day.

Instructions

  • In a high-speed blender or food processor, combine the frozen banana, avocado, spinach, mint or peppermint extract, matcha, vanilla, non-dairy milk, and ice. Blend on high for 1 – 2 minutes, pausing to scrape down the sides of the canister with a spatula if needed, until smooth and creamy.
  • Add date or maple syrup if desired and pour into one or two glasses. Enjoy icy cold!

Notes

Serving suggestion: Chocolate is an ideal pairing with anything minty, so a handful of dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs blended in at the last minute, left a bit chunky for texture, certainly wouldn’t hurt.
Power up with a bit of protein powder, hemp seeds, or raw cashews to make this a more filling snack or light meal.
Notes: If you’re particularly caffeine-sensitive, feel free to omit the matcha and enjoy a more classic shamrock shake.
