Are plantains the same as bananas?
Plantains, a cousin of the banana, are a nutrient-dense starchy fruit rich in fiber, potassium, and complex carbohydrates. When sliced thin and air-fried, they transform into irresistibly crispy chips with a slightly sweet, savory flavor.
They’re especially popular in Caribbean, Latin American, and African cuisines—but this recipe gives them a healthy twist that fits beautifully into a whole food plant-based lifestyle.
Where can you find plantains?
You can usually find plantains in the produce section of most major grocery stores, often near the bananas, or at Latin American, Caribbean, African, and international markets. Look for green or just-yellowing plantains if you want chips that are crisp and not too sweet.
How to enjoy Crispy Air-Fried Plantain Chips?

Crispy Air-Fried Plantain Chips (Vegan & Oil-Free)
Ingredients
- 2 medium green plantains (about ¾ pound total)
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Use a sharp knife to cut off the ends of the plantain, then score the skin lengthwise, without going through to the flesh. Carefully remove the peel, leaving the inner plantain in one piece.
- Cut plantains into diagonal slices about 1/8-inch thick. Use a mandoline for the greatest precision, or a very sharp knife to practice your knife skills. Place the slices in a large bowl.
- Sprinkle lime juice, chili powder, cumin, and a pinch of salt into the bowl. Toss very gently to coat.
- Line two air fryer sheets with foil. If using a basket, you’ll likely need to do this in several batches.
- Arrange the sliced and seasoned plantains in a single layer, without any overlapping.
- Air fry at 370℉ degrees for 5 – 6 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 5 – 6 minutes or until evenly browned.
- They may still be slightly soft when hot out of the air fryer. Let cool completely before enjoying
