There are two big challenges that many people face when wanting to go whole food plant based. It’s usually, “I can’t give up cheese” and “I have major chocolate cravings.” Well, for today’s WFPB recipe – Vegan Double Chocolate Chip Cookies, I’ll at least be able to help you with the chocolate challenge!

Dark Chocolate Is Actually HEALTHY for You

The truth is that chocolate isn’t bad for you! It’s actually very healthy with lots of antioxidants, flavonoids, and guess what….fiber!

The problem is what we ADD to the chocolate. Milk, sugar, oil, butter…..

Those are the unhealthy ingredients that take a ride along with the chocolate.

But just plain old vegan, dark chocolate can satisfy that craving without sacrificing your health or waistline.

Where to Find Vegan Dark Chocolate Chips

I can usually find vegan dark chocolate chips at most stores these days – even Walmart & Target!

So, you want to look for dark chocolate that is dairy free and around 70% cocoa or higher. You also want to have low sugar added. Enjoy Life Dark Chocolate Morsels are a good brand that is 69% cocoa and all their products are vegan and allergy-friendly.

There are other brands on the market as well, so you just have to read the label. You want to make sure the cocoa is high and there isn’t any milk added and not too much sugar. FYI – cocoa butter is not dairy butter. It’s the fat from the cocoa bean, so if you see that on the label it’s still vegan.

When choosing cocoa powder, you also want to choose one that is unsweetened.

These Vegan Double Chocolate Chip Cookies are Oil Free & Refined Sugar Free

As for the oil or butter in a regular cookie recipe, that has been swapped out and I like to use unsweetened applesauce in its place. Works like a charm every time and it’s just a simple 1:1 ratio swap.

These vegan double chocolate chip cookies are also refined sugar free and you have some choices on what you use to lightly sweeten them. I use half coconut sugar and half date paste. But you can also use all date paste or all coconut sugar.

Coconut sugar is unrefined, but date paste is even healthier because it’s just dates ground up with water. You can make your own date paste or even buy date paste pre-made from The Date Lady.

I hope you enjoy this super simple recipe that’s done in less than 30 minutes!

  • Mix together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl (whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, & coconut sugar).
  • Add the date paste, apple sauce, plant milk, & vanilla extract. Mix well with a spoon until batter is fully combined.
  • Fold in dark chocolate chips.
